Our Program
Smile on Seniors is an innovative program that aims to meet the needs of the seniors within your community by connecting them with willing and capable volunteers. It has been proven time and time again that consistent human interactions can greatly impact the quality of life of the aged, and those who interact with seniors are in the position to accomplish a tremendous amount.

SOS is designed to enable seniors to develop intimate, on-going relationships with volunteers. As part of the program, the volunteers are encouraged to share Torah thoughts, stories, or relevant information about upcoming Jewish holidays. The time spent with the seniors will be fully utilized so that they are able to benefit from and enjoy it as much as possible.

Volunteers
Anyone with 15 minutes a week and a heart of gold can be an SOS volunteer. Prior to initial senior visitation, a volunteer is required to participate in a brief orientation session, which will take place at the assigned facility. These sessions will help ensure the success of the visits. Program directors will give a guided tour of their facility. It is the job of the local SOS coordinator to contact the senior home and to establish a relationship with the program director. The program director will help you identify the Jewish residents and direct the volunteer to assigned seniors.

Consistency
A major goal of the Smile on Seniors program is to recruit volunteers that are interested in developing a long term relationship with their senior. SOS coordinators will need to schedule visits and encourage the volunteers to be consistent with their weekly visits. Anticipating future visits with an SOS volunteer can help seniors maintain a more positive outlook and consistency is a crucial key to a relationship.

SOS Staff
Coordinating SOS involves a considerable amount of work. It requires time calling senior facilities to identify the Jewish seniors in your area. You will also need to work hard in getting people to commit to volunteering. It often requires a great deal of time and effort on the part of staff members and can be frustrating when facing obstacles.

It is therefore recommended to have “Volunteer Coordinators”. Ideally, each coordinator should be given the responsibility of overseeing up to 10 (but not necessarily that many), volunteers. The VC would be required to stay in touch with “their volunteer” to make sure the visitations are going well. They should be guided as to when it is necessary to contact you should there be any problems.

SOS Supporters
Community members and leaders will become very excited about SOS in your town.

Every single community member is a potential supporter because most community members have a senior in his or her life. If they themselves cannot find the time to volunteer on a regular basis, they will generally be supportive of the program because it is something close to their hearts. Even if they or their parent are not at the senior stage yet they might be soon. It’s in their best interest to see to the success of the program.
